Almost 5 Million Portable Blenders Recalled From Target, Costco, And Walmart

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of nearly 5 million portable BlendJet blenders from major retailers such as Target, Walmart, and Costco. The blenders reportedly have two issues: they can overheat causing a fire hazard and the blades can break off while the blender is in use. BlendJet recalled 4.8 million BlendJet 2 portable blenders sold from October 2020 to November of 2023 for between $50 and $75.

According to the recall, the blender can overheat creating a potential fire risk to consumers. The blades can also break off while the blender is in use creating a potential for laceration injuries. BlendJet reported that it received 329 reports of the blades breaking off while the product was in use and an additional 17 reports of the product overheating. The company reported that the overheating issue resulted in fires with property damage claims of around $150,000. The company has received 49 reports of burns that were described as “minor” and one laceration injury.

Owners have been instructed to contact BlendJet for a free replacement unit. Customers can cut the rubber seal from the base of the blender into three or more pieces and email a photo of the blender to BlendJet showing the serial number at the bottom.

Personal blender complaints and injuries 

Blenders are well-known in product liability circles for causing serious injury to customers. They can explode, overheat, and sometimes, the blades can break inside the blender causing a risk of laceration injury. BlendJet isn’t the only company to face such complaints by consumers. MagicBullet and NutriBullet have also produced blenders that exploded when in use or otherwise caused injury to users.

SharkNinja was also implicated in several consumer injuries. In this case, customers suffered laceration injuries from the blender and it had to be recalled. SharkNinja received 53 complaints related to laceration injuries suffered by their customers.

Defective blenders can result in burn injuries to customers especially when used to blend hot food. Severe burns can result in scarring and skin discoloration.
