Royal Caribbean Employee Accused Of Hiding Cameras To Spy On Guests

Arvin Joseph Mirasol, a 34-year-old man from the Philippines, was arrested in April on charges of hiding cameras inside the bathrooms of passenger cabins to spy on guests, including underage girls. The 34-year-old was arrested on federal charges of production and possession of child sex abuse material. The alleged conduct happened aboard The Symphony of the Seas. He was arrested after the cruise ship arrived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in the U.S. District Court of Florida. In addition, he faces six counts of voyeurism on state charges.

A guest who was staying in a cabin aboard The Symphony of the Seas found a camera in her bathroom on February 25, 2024. According to the guest, it was “affixed to the counter underneath the sink.” She reported the camera to ship officials, who then sent security to the room to investigate. Mirasol was detained on the ship until March 3 when it docked in Fort Lauderdale. Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection, and the Broward Sheriff’s Office questioned him. Agents were able to uncover “numerous videos of naked females” as well as images of child sex abuse while looking through his phone, an SD card, and a USB stick, according to the affidavit. One of the videos showed Mirasol installing a camera in a guest’s cabin.

Authorities uncovered a five-minute video of a 10-year-old girl who entered the bathroom, removed her clothes, and got into the shower, the affidavit said. The suspect told investigators he had been placing cameras in bathrooms since he began working on the cruise ship in December 2023. He told investigators that he wants to be able to control the conduct, but can’t. When asked how he chose where to put the cameras, Mirasol told investigators that he targeted those he found attractive. In addition to hiding cameras, Mirasol told investigators that he would hide under the bed to film guests and record them getting dressed.

Royal Caribbean issued a statement saying that they have fired Mirasol and are cooperating with the investigation.
