2024 Arctic Cat Mountain Snowmobiles Recalled Due To Crash Hazard
Textron Specialized Vehicles and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) have announced the recall of 2024 Arctic Cat Mountain Snowmobiles due to a crash hazard. According to the recall, the pin on the u-joint of the steering knuckle was not swagged correctly. This can allow the pin to come out of the u-joint and cause the rider to lose control of the steering, posing a major crash hazard. About 600 snowmobiles are being recalled due to the hazard.
The CPSC is advising consumers to stop using the 2024 Arctic Cat Mountain snowmobile immediately and contact their local authorized Arctic Cat dealer for a free inspection of the steering column u-joint and free repair, if necessary. Dealerships will inspect the steering post joint on the snowmobile. If the pin is properly swagged, there is no repair necessary. If the steering post joint pin was not properly swagged, the entire steering post assembly will be replaced.
Textron has received 6 reports of cross pins that have become loose or have fallen out. Thus far, no injuries have been reported.
Alternative vehicles and product liability cases
Lawsuits against snowmobile manufacturers are rare. However, there is at least one wrongful death lawsuit that has been filed against a snowmobile manufacturer for the death of a rider. In this case, the plaintiff’s estate is blaming mechanical failure for the accident that led to his death. The aforementioned recall is a dangerous one. Snowmobiles can travel up to 120 mph. If the steering goes while the snowmobile is traveling that fast, then the rider could be in serious danger.
Thus far, there have been no injuries reported due to the snowblower’s failure. Luckily, we’re in the middle of summer and snowmobiles aren’t very popular right now. So the recall is timed well. However, if anyone is injured by the defective snowblower, they could file a product liability lawsuit against the manufacturer and recover damages related to their medical expenses, lost wages, and reduced quality of life. To do so, they would have to prove that the failure of the steering column caused the accident which ultimately led to their injury. If they can establish this, then they have strong grounds for a product liability lawsuit against the manufacturer.
