GoveeLife And Govee Smart Electric Space Heaters Recalled Due To Fire And Burn Hazards

SpaceHeater3

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recently announced the recall of GoveeLife and Govee Smart Electric Space Heaters. According to the recall, the smart electric space heaters can overheat, posing fire and burn hazards. Testing also determined that the smart electric space heaters do not comply with the voluntary industry safety standard, UL 1278, posing an overheating and fire risk from wireless control features.

The CPSC is advising consumers to immediately stop using the recalled electric space heaters and contact the brand for a refund. Consumers should unplug the electric space heater, cut the power cord, and send an image of the destroyed space heater to GoveeLife or Govee through this link: https://recall.goveelife.com/heater-recall. Consumers who do not have the original order number will receive a refund for the product. Consumers who do have the original order number will receive a full refund of the purchase price. Consumers can contact heatersupport@goveelife.com if they have any problems finding their order number.

GoveeLifee has received 113 reports of their space heaters overheating, including seven reports of fires and one report of a minor burn injury. The units were sold on GoveeLife’s own website and through Amazon.com.

Space heaters and product liability

Space heaters are dangerous products when defective. They are supposed to have safety mechanisms that prevent the space heater from overheating. When used indoors, they increase the risk of fire damage if they overheat. Several product liability lawsuits have been filed against various companies alleging damage caused by space heaters including personal injury.

One lawsuit was filed on behalf of a consumer who suffered severe burns from a malfunctioning Mr. Heater Big Buddy propane heater. The plaintiff claimed the heater was defective and unreasonably dangerous, and that it deviated from standard design specifications. In another case filed against the same company, a lawsuit claimed that the space heater was designed defectively because the propane heater emitted carbon dioxide. In another case against Mr. Heater, a plaintiff argued that she unwittingly used the heater inside of her home due to inadequate warnings issued by the manufacturer.

Product liability lawsuits and property damage

While individuals are injured by space heaters, and they can file lawsuits claiming personal injury, it is also possible to file a lawsuit against a manufacturer if their product causes major property damage. Space heaters with inadequate safety features are prone to overheating, melting, cracking, smoking, and catching fire. In the case mentioned above, only one person suffered minor burn injuries, but there were several reports of property damage. You can sue if your property is damaged by a defective space heater.
