ALDI Recalls Ambiana Single-Serve Coffee Makers Due To Burn Hazard
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recently announced the recall of ALDI’s brand Ambiana Single-Serve Coffee Makers due to a potential risk of burn injury. According to the recall, the recalled coffee makers can expel hot liquid from the top of the device posing a potential burn hazard to those using the machine.
Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the recalled coffee makers. Customers can return the unit to an ALDI store for a full cash refund of $49.99 plus applicable sales tax. As a second option, ALDI customers can receive a $75 ALDI electronic gift card when they visit www.recallrtr.com/aldicoffeemaker, register the recalled product, and receive instructions on how to cut the unplugged cord, dispose of the product, and upload photos of the destroyed coffee maker to the web address listed. Customers will also have to provide the model number, registration number, and cut the cord.
At present, ALDI has received 25 reports that the recalled coffee makers expelled hot liquid from the top of the machine. Three of those reports included evidence of burn injuries.
Defective coffee maker lawsuits
Well, it goes without saying that coffee makers are not supposed to eject hot liquid from the top of the device and spray it on the user causing burn injuries. If your coffee maker is behaving in an unanticipated way, and you sustained injuries as a result of that behavior, you may be entitled to compensation.
The CPSC has fielded numerous complaints about defective coffee makers in the past and plaintiffs have filed burn injury lawsuits against coffee maker manufacturers before. Most of these complaints involve burn injuries from exploding K Cups or water. Kcups can explode when pressure builds up inside if the coffee machine is defectively designed. The coffee maker’s water can also get overheated and explode.
First- and second-degree burns are the most likely injuries to be reported from defective coffee makers. In other cases, third-degree burns may present themselves.
Product liability lawsuits
Product liability lawsuits involving coffee makers are not uncommon. In these cases, users report being burned by “exploding” coffee makers that eject hot liquid from the tops of the device. Since most people like their coffee hot, such a potential defect would quickly render the device unusable.
This is an example of an intrinsic defect case. The coffee maker is alleged to have an intrinsic defect that renders it unreasonably dangerous to the general public. Even though ALDI has initiated a recall, that doesn’t get them out of paying consumers who have been injured by their device. In cases where a consumer is injured, they can file a product liability lawsuit against the manufacturer and recover damages related to their medical expenses, lost wages, and reduced quality of life.
