Amazon Facing Lawsuit Over Defective “Exploding” Pressure Cooker

A Texas plaintiff has filed a product liability lawsuit against Amazon for selling her an unreasonably dangerous and defective Instant Pot pressure cooker. She alleges that the pressure cooker sprayed her with scalding hot contents after it exploded while the lid was being removed. The Instant Pot’s safety features should have never allowed her to remove the lid while the contents were still under pressure.
The plaintiff filed her complaint on August 6 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas. She is pursuing damages from Amazon.com and Midea America Corp which designed, manufactured, and distributed the pressure cooker.
This recently filed product liability case joins a growing number of defective pressure cooker lawsuits filed in recent months. Each of the suits make nearly identical allegations about “unreasonably dangerous designs and defective safety features” on Instant Pots and other modern pressure cookers, including products sold under the brand names Crock-Pot, Ninja Foodi, Tristar, and other popular brands.
Commonly, pressure cooker injuries involve burns, which can range from first to third degree and typically cover a large percentage of the victim’s body. Such burn injuries can leave patients prone to infections and sometimes require amputations. However, other injuries linked to pressure cookers have included eye injuries, broken bones, electrocution injuries, and injuries related to explosions.
What happened?
According to the complaint, the plaintiff purchased her Instant Pot Duo pressure cooker through Amazon.com in late August 2022. Less than a month after her purchase, the pot allowed her to rotate the lid while the contents were still under pressure. She was unaware that the contents were under pressure when she opened the lid. This caused the contents to explode out of the pressure cooker, scalding her.
The lawsuit alleges that the scalding hot contents were forcefully ejected from the Instant Pot and onto the plaintiff, resulting in serious burn injuries. The plaintiff is presenting claims of design defect, failure to warn, negligence, and breach of implied warranty of merchantability.
Who can I sue over a defective pressure cooker?
If you’ve been injured or burned by a defective pressure cooker, you may be entitled to compensation. You have valid product liability claims against both the manufacturer of the defective product and the retailer who entered the defective product into the stream of commerce. In this case, both the manufacturer of the Instant Pot and Amazon can be sued for personal injury.
An individual who filed a personal injury suit on the basis of a defective pressure cooker could recover damages related to their medical expenses, lost wages, and reduced quality of life. Burn injuries tend to leave substantial unsightly scarring, so compensation for these injuries is generally substantial.
