RockClimbing

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently announced the recall of BD Vision Climbing Harnesses. According to the recall, the BD vision harnesses can degrade over time and fail to support the climber, posing a serious fall hazard which could result in serious injury or death. The recall date is March 13, 2025. About 1,580 units were sold in the United States with another 130 being sold in Canada.

The recall involves all BD vision harnesses. The lightweight harness is designed for technical Alpine and ice climbs. All sizes are included in this recall. The harness has fixed leg loops and was sold in black and white colors. “Black Diamond” is printed on one of the leg loops. Vision is printed on the other leg loop.

The CPSC is advising all consumers to immediately stop using the recalled BD vision harnesses and contact Black Diamond for a full refund. The company has announced that it will refund all consumers directly for their purchase in the form of a credit card reimbursements or a one time use $200 credit, which can be used at a Black Diamond store or on the Black Diamond website. Consumers should contact Black Diamond for a prepaid shipping label to return the recalled harness. Black Diamond is contacting all known purchasers directly.

Black Diamond has received one report involving the harness’s waist belt failing. No injuries have yet to be reported.

The recalled harnesses were sold at Liberty Mountain, Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI) and other specialty outdoor stores nationwide. The products were also sold online at Black Diamond’s website and other outdoor sports websites including www.backcountry.com and www.evo.com from January 2018 through February 2025 for about $175.

Defective climbing gear lawsuits

Rock and mountain climbing is potentially dangerous. Climbers rely on their equipment to ensure their safety. When the equipment fails, the climber can be exposed to serious injury or even death.

In the majority of situations, liability for failure of climbing gear can be traced to the manufacturer. This is especially true in cases where that gear is defective. For example, if a manufacturer uses materials that do not meet the industry standards for strength and breakage points, they can be held liable for any injuries that occur. Another example includes when a particular climbing gear item is designed poorly and in a way that creates an additional risk of injury and fall.

Depending on the circumstances of your case, other companies can also be held liable for an injury. For example, the owner or operator of an indoor climbing facility can be held liable when they provide patrons with gear that they knew or should have known was defective. In addition, instructors or climbing guides may be held negligent for failing to properly inspect the climbing gear of a patron or a student.
