BMC Recalls Kaius 01 Bicycles And Framesets Due To Fall Hazard

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently announced the recall of BMC branded Kaius 01 bicycles and frame sets. According to the recall, the fork steerer tube on the recalled bicycles and frame sets can crack, break, or separate during use, posing a substantial fall hazard. The recall date for this product is March 13, 2025. Roughly 1300 units have been recalled by the CPSC.
The recall involves all BMC branded Kaius 01 bicycles and frame sets. The bikes and frame sets were sold in Peacock spider, carbon black/brushed blue, purple/white, white/black, turquoise/black, saffron/black, and stone grey colors. The brand BMC is printed on the down tube. Only bicycles and frame sets with a V5 fork are affected by the recall and require a replacement fork.
The CPSC is advising consumers to immediately stop using the recalled bicycles and contact an authorized BMC dealer for a free inspection and a free replacement of the forks. BMC is contacting all known purchasers directly. At present, BMC has received 2 reports of the V5 fork steerers separating from the bicycle frame. No injuries have yet to be reported.
The recalled bicycles are sold at authorized BMC bicycle dealers nationwide and online from July 2022 through February 2025 for between $4,500 and $12,000.
Defective bicycle lawsuits
Bicycles can become dangerous when they have a design or manufacturing defect. Product defects that arise in bicycle accident claims typically fall into the following three categories:
- Design defects – a design defect occurs when an individual is injured from a poorly designed bicycle. Design defects are flaws in the basic blueprint of the bicycle or in the components associated with the structure that render it inherently dangerous to cyclists and other road users. Design flaws can include defective braking systems, hazardous tire designs, or any feature that is not designed properly and, as a result, makes the bicycle dangerous to ride. Under the law, a manufacturer is strictly liable for any accident that results from a design defect.
- Manufacturing defects – a manufacturing defect is a problem that occurs during the construction of the bike or during the assembly phase. It generally only affects a specific portion of the entire bicycle, such as one manufactured in a specific month or year or those made at a specific plant.
- Marketing defects – an injured party can also file a product liability claim against a designer, manufacturer, distributor, or seller based on their failure to warn their customers of specific hazards associated with the bike at the time of the sale. For example, if a bike is sold without proper instructions detailing how to use it safely, and the user subsequently gets injured due to the failure to warn, the designer, manufacturer, or seller can be held liable for damages.
