Charmast Power Banks Sold Exclusively By Amazon Recalled Due To Fire And Burn Hazards

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced the recall of Charmast Power Banks sold exclusively by Amazon due to fire and burn hazards. According to the recall, the lithium-ion battery in the recalled power banks can overheat and ignite, posing fire and burn hazards to customers. 488,000 units have been recalled.
Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the recalled power banks and contact Charmast for instructions on how to receive a full refund. To receive the refund, consumers will be required to provide photographs of their model W1056 power bank, their names and dates of the photograph written in permanent marker above the label, and sever the power cord.
Charmast has received 44 reports of the recalled power banks expanding, igniting, melting, overheating, or smoking. This includes four reports of consumers getting burned or blistered by the recalled power banks.
The power banks were sold online at Amazon.com from December 2018 through September 2024 for between $14 and $25.
Lithium-ion battery fires and product liability
It seems like every week the CPSC is recalling a new device due to its lithium-ion battery potentially becoming unstable and causing burn injuries to consumers. These batteries are not necessarily dangerous but can be dangerous when they have manufacturing defects or there is a flaw in the device’s design which renders the battery unstable.
Lithium-ion batteries are often used in electronic devices and electric vehicles. This is due to their high energy density. They are also very easy to recharge. However, the same qualities that make them desirable for consumers also render them dangerous to consumers. Potential hazards include:
- Overheating
- Fire
- Exposure to alkaline battery electrolytes
- Electrical shock from battery chargers
- Thermal burns
- Shrapnel ejected by the internal components of the battery
Consumers have suffered a broad array of injuries due to lithium-ion battery fires and explosions. These include:
- Severe burns
- Scarring
- Shrapnel injuries
- Inhalation injuries
- Eye injuries
- Hearing loss
- Psychological trauma
- Property damage
Who can be held liable for a lithium-ion battery fire or explosion?
Depending on the circumstances of your case, numerous parties can be held liable for a lithium-ion battery fire or explosion. These include:
- Battery manufacturer
- Device manufacturer
- Retailer who sold the product
- Charging accessory manufacturer
In some cases, it may be possible to hold distributors and vendors at fault if they contributed to the product’s malfunction in some way. As an example, if a distributor removed important label information, they can be held liable. A vendor can be held liable for selling a recalled product. Amazon can be held liable for making a product like Charmast power banks available to the public.
