Colsen Recalls Fire Pits Due To Serious Burn Injury Hazard

BurnSevere

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced the recall of Colsen fire pits. According to the recall, there is a danger of flame jetting when refilling the fire pit reservoir. Flame jetting is a “serious event” that can occur when pouring alcohol. The fire flashes back to the alcohol container and unexpectedly propels burning alcohol out of the container and onto nearby people. The recall says that alcohol can also splash, spill, or leak out of the fire pit reservoir during use, causing a flash fire that can spread and create larger, hotter flames that escape the unit.

The CPSC warns that using the recalled fire pits can lead to injury quickly and unexpectedly, causing burns in less than one second. These can be serious and even deadly.

Consumers are being asked to dispose of the recalled fire pits. Consumers are warned not to give the fire pits away or attempt to sell them. It is illegal to resell a recalled product. The company stopped selling Colsen-branded fire pits less than a year after it acquired the product business and does not have the financial resources to compensate customers.

The CPSC has received 31 reports of flame jetting and flames escaping from the concrete container. This has resulted in 19 burn injuries. At least six of these incidents required surgery, prolonged medical treatment, admission to burn treatment facilities, short-term disability, loss of function, physical therapy, or permanent disfigurement.

The fire pits were sold online at colsenfirepits.com and Amazon.com. They were also sold by Walmart, Wayfair, Sharper Image, FlipShop, Grommet, Meta, and TikTok from January 2020 to July 2024 for between $40 and $90.

Injuries and damages

Some victims suffered burns on 40% of their bodies caused by flash fires that occurred while they were refilling the fire pits. One victim was placed into a medically-induced coma in a trauma burn unit as a result of contact with the fire pit. According to the victim, the fire pit flared up when her husband attempted to refill it. The woman went on to spend four weeks in a Pennsylvania hospital as a result of the burn injuries that she suffered. She has since filed a burn injury lawsuit against Colsen as she heals from her injuries. She was one of two victims who suffered third-degree burns as a result of the fire pits.

Plaintiffs will be able to file lawsuits against both Colsen and companies like Amazon from which they purchased the product. They are entitled to recover damages for medical expenses, lost wages, and reduced quality of life. In many cases, victims suffered disfigurement injuries as a result of the product.

This isn’t the first time we’ve written about Colsen fire pits. A Lexington couple filed a product liability lawsuit against Colsen after suffering burn injuries.
