Dorel Home Furnishings Recalls Dorel Wall Beds Due To Major Impact And Crush Hazards

WallBed

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced the recall of Dorel Home Furnishing’s Wall Beds. According to the recall, the wall beds can detach from the wall and fall onto those nearby, posing a serious impact and crush hazard to anyone in the vicinity. Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the recalled wall beds and contact Dorel for information on coordinating for a “reimbursable professional inspection” and, if necessary, reinstallation, after submitting their professional quote to Dorel. All known purchasers of the wall beds are being contacted by Dorel directly.

Dorel has received 22 reports of the beds falling, resulting in 10 injuries including concussions, contusions, cuts, and bruises.

The wall beds were sold online at Wayfair.com, Overstock.com, Cymax.com, Amazon.com, HomeDepot.com, Walmart.com, Lowes.com, Real-Rooms.com, Target.com, BedBathandBeyond.com, MathisBrothers.com, BaileysFurnitureOutlet.com, Rona.com, BigLots.com, and NebraskaFurnitureMart.com from May 2021 through April 2024 for about $900.

Wallbeds and consumer product liability lawsuits

Collapsing wall beds have not been the subject of many U.S. product liability suits, but a recent development in Canada shows just how dangerous they can be. Canada’s Bestar recently agreed to pay a $16 million civil penalty for failing to report a defect in its wall beds until after one person was killed and more than a dozen others were injured, according to federal officials.

In September 2014, and continuing through 2022, Bestar received several reports that the products had detached from the wall. By 2016, the company was informed of two cases in which people had been injured after the beds fell on them. The CPSC fined the company for failing to report the defect until after one person was dead and several others were injured. According to the CPSC and Health Canada, Bestar failed to tell the agencies about five additional incidents that they were aware of at the time of the recall. In 2018, a Bestar wall bed fell on an elderly woman, causing injuries that led to hospitalization and ultimately, death.

Bestar was allegedly aware of 35 incidents in which its beds detached from walls and fell on people. This resulted in one fatality and 15 injuries, some of which were quite serious, according to the CPSC.

Bestar is accused of knowingly failing to immediately report that its wall beds posed a serious impact and crushing hazard, as required by law, the CPSC said. The CPSC has agreed to suspend all but $4 million of the $16 million penalty because it would cause the company to go out of business.

If you have been crushed or bludgeoned by a wall bed, you are entitled to file a lawsuit against the company that manufactured the defective bed.
