Electric Smokers Recalled Due To Electrical Shock Risk

ElectricSmoker

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a recall for over 200,000 electric smokers manufactured by the Char-Broil Brand. These smokers were actively sold in the U.S. and Canada. The Char-Broil brand digital electric smokers were designed for outdoor use to cook without charcoal. The smokers were sold at Lowe’s, Ollie’s, Bargain Outlet, Target, and other major retailers across the country. They were also sold online at Amazon, HSN, and through the brand’s website from April 2015 through January of 2024 costing between $300 and $600.

The company announced the recall after receiving 79 complaints from customers who reported “minor electric shocks” when touching the smoker while in use. There was one report of a burn injury caused by an electrical shock that resulted in blistering of the skin.

Char-Broil is recommending that customers contact them to schedule a free repair for the faulty smokers.

Electrical shock injuries and product liability

Consumers who are injured due to defective products can file product liability lawsuits against the company that manufactured the product and the retailer who made the product available to the public. Lawsuits against Amazon, Target, and Walmart are common when it comes to defective products. These retailers have a duty of care to ensure that the products they make available to the public are safe to use. When these products cause injury, the retailer can be held liable as well as the manufacturer.

Recently, Emporia Smart Plugs recalled 80,000 smart plugs. According to the recall, the smart plugs were not adequately grounded resulting in electric shocks to customers. Another recent recall involving the risk of electrical shock involved water well pumps manufactured by DynaDrive. The company received one report of a customer suffering an electrical shock due to the product.

Product liability lawsuits

When filing a product liability lawsuit based on an electrical shock injury, the consumer must establish that a defect in the product directly resulted in some injury. Injuries don’t need to be life-threatening to file a product liability lawsuit. If you incurred medical expenses as a result of a defective product, you should consider consulting with an attorney to determine if you are owed damages.

When it comes to electrical shock injuries, the most commonly reported ailment is burns. In the case of the electric smoker, one customer reported burn injuries and blisters to his hands. This would be enough to establish injury in a product liability lawsuit. The defective smoker is directly responsible for the injury to the customer’s hands. So the company that manufactured the product is liable for causing the injury.
