GoveeLife And Govee Smart Electric Space Heaters Recalled Due To Fire Hazard
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently announced the recall of GoveeLife and Govee Smart electric space heaters. According to the recall, the smart electric space heaters can overheat, posing fire and burn hazards. Testing determined that the smart electric space heaters do not comply with the voluntary industry safety standard, UL 1278, posing an overheating and fire risk from wireless control features. Half a million units were recalled in the United States and another 50,000 were recalled in Canada.
Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the recalled electric space heaters and contact the bran for a refund. Consumers should unplug the electric space heater, cut the power cord, and send an image of the destroyed electric space heater, the manufacturer’s label, and SN Code on the bottom or side of the unit to GoveeLife or Govee through this link: https://recall.goveelife.com/heater-recall.
GoveeLife has received 113 reports of overheating, including seven reports of fires and one report of a minor burn injury.
The units were sold on Govee’s webpage and over Amazon.com.
Space heater product liability lawsuits
Space heaters can be intrinsically dangerous products when their safety features malfunction. There have been several lawsuits filed against manufacturers and retailers.
Most recently, in 2018 Vornado recalled its VH101 Personal Vortex electric space heater after a 90-year-old man died in a fire caused by the space heater. Vornado agreed to pay a $7.5 million civil penalty to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission for failing to report defects in the space heater to the CPSC as required by law.
In 2015, a California jury awarded the family of a woman who died in a fire over $59 million. The space heater was manufactured by Sunbeam Products Inc. The jury found that Sunbeam was negligent in designing the product and failing to adequately warn customers about known dangers. In this case, a jury determined that Sunbeam was aware of the fire risks posed by its space heaters and determined that the company’s space heater presented a substantial danger that ordinary consumers would not be aware of.
The estate of a Georgia woman filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Walmart and two space heater manufacturers after a space heater caused a deadly house fire.
Can I recover compensation for defective space heater?
Yes. Every year plaintiffs file lawsuits or there are recalls related to defective space heaters that potentially can cause fires, burns, and other serious injuries. Such lawsuits are filed against both the manufacturer of the defective space heater and the retailer who made the product available to the public. So, if you sustained a burn injury or property damage due to a defective space heater, you can file a product liability suit against both the manufacturer and the retailer with the help of a Florida product liability attorney.
