Quad Lock MAG Battery Pack Recalled Due To Fire Hazard

BatteryPack

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recently announced the recall of Quad Lock MAG Battery Packs. According to the recall, the battery packs can overheat, posing a fire hazard. The company is willing to refund all consumers who purchased the product. About 13,700 units have been recalled across the U.S. and Canada. Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the recalled battery packs, remove them from the charger, and contact Quad Lock for a full refund of the purchase price or store credit.

Quad Lock has received 39 reports of incidents in the U.S. which include three reports of fire and 36 reports of smoking, melting, cracking, or swelling, resulting in two reports of property damage caused by the defective chargers. Quad Lock has also received 170 reports of incidents internationally, including four reports of fire and 166 reports of smoking, melting, cracking or swelling, resulting in one report of property damage.

The products were sold via Quad Lock’s own website and on Amazon.com.

Lithium-ion batteries and product liability

The product mentioned above works on a lithium-ion battery. Lithium-ion batteries are rechargeable batteries that are commonly found in everyday devices. These include electric cars, smartphones, tablets, and laptops. In many cases, these batteries work without a problem. However, sometimes, they can explode, overheat, and cause fires.

Those who are injured due to a lithium-ion battery fire may be entitled to compensation. You would have to establish that the consumer product that used the lithium-ion battery overheated and resulted in a house fire that caused injury or property damage. Often, it’s not the lithium-ion battery itself that is to blame, but the consumer product that uses the lithium-ion battery. The product causes the battery to short resulting in the battery overheating. This, in turn, results in property damage or injury.

Lithium-ion battery fires are extremely dangerous. They are very difficult to put out and can even reignite several hours after being extinguished. Water and fire extinguishers are not effective at stopping lithium-ion battery fires and can sometimes actually spread the fire. Individuals are burned when they try to put out the fire or prevent their devices from overheating.

When is the manufacturer responsible for a lithium-ion battery fire?

In most cases, the company that manufactured the product that overheated is responsible (or liable) when their product causes injury. Unless the consumer was somehow tampering with the device or using it in a way that was not expected by the manufacturer, the manufacturer is strictly liable for any injuries caused by their product. The retailer that sold the product can also be sued.
