Shadeks Recalls ShadesU Roller Window Shades Due To Strangulation And Entanglement Hazards

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission recently announced the recall of Shadeks’ ShadesU Roller Window Shades. According to the recall, the recalled window blinds have long operating cords that can cause death or serious injury to children due to strangulation and entanglement hazards. The window blinds are in violation of federal regulations for window coverings and present a substantial product hazard. The window blinds also violate federal regulations for the labeling of window coverings.
Consumers are advised to immediately put the window blind cords up and away from children and contact Shadeks for instructions on how to return the shades for a free repair. Shadeks will remove the long operating cord and update the shades to a cordless design. Consumers will need to provide their contact information and address to receive a free shipping label. The blinds were sold exclusively on Amazon.com and Amazon is contacting all known purchasers directly.
Although no injuries have yet to be reported, window blinds that do not follow federal regulations pose a substantial threat to young children.
Window blind strangulation lawsuits
A study conducted by the American Academy of Pediatrics using data gleaned from 1990 to 2015 indicates that there were approximately 16,827 injuries related to window blinds among children under six years of age. This is an injury rate of 2.7 per 100,000 children. Almost 12% of those injuries were from entanglement and 98.9% of those entanglement injuries involved window blind cords. Meanwhile, the vast majority of entanglements (98.7%) involve the child’s neck, and a significant number (67.1%) resulted in the death of a child.
In addition, The US Consumer Product Safety Commission lists window coverings with cords as one of the top five hidden household hazards. According to their reports, these cords present a danger to children as old as 8 years of age. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled over 5 million window coverings, including blinds and Roman shades.
While regulations help somewhat to increase the safety of window blinds, many manufacturers continue to produce blinds that violate federal regulations for cord length. When they do, and a child is injured, the window blind manufacturer can be held responsible for their potential death. Such lawsuits are not unusual and have been filed in the past against window blind companies. They generally allege that the window blind manufacturer knowingly created a dangerous hazard within the homes of US consumers.
