Super73 Recalls Z Miami SE And Z Adventure Core Electric Bikes Due To Crash Hazard

E_BikeBrake

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently announced the recall of Super73’s Z Miami SE and Z adventure core electric bikes due to crash and injury hazards. According to the recall, the retaining pin in the e-bike’s disc brake calipers can loosen and dislodge from the caliper assembly, resulting in brake failure, posing crash and injury hazards to the rider. Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the recalled e-bikes and contact the company for a free repair kit. Consumers will receive a new retaining pin and up to $50 toward the cost of a professional installation for the new pin. Consumers will be asked to send a copy of their installation receipt to Super73 for reimbursement of the installation cost. Super73 and its retailers are contacting all known purchasers directly.

According to the recall, Super73 has received 21 reports of loose retaining pins and or related brake failure, resulting in one minor injury.

Defective e-bike lawsuits

Electric bicycles are a fun way for people of all ages to get around. But they are especially popular among preteens and teenagers who aren’t old enough yet to drive. Unlike other vehicles, e-bikes do not require driver’s licenses. Nonetheless, these bikes can be dangerous. Many e-bikes are sold as direct-to-consumer kits and some of the companies that manufacture them cut corners on designs to maximize their profits. This can make e-bikes even more dangerous to consumers.

The most famous defective e-bike lawsuit involves a 12-year-old girl by the name of Molly Steinsapsir. She was using her friend’s sister’s e-bike that she had received as a bat mitzvah gift. The two girls took the e-bike for a ride on Enchanted Way, which turned up a cliff above their neighborhood. At the top of Enchanted Way, people can see the entire area and take in views of the scenery. Her friend was piloting the bicycle while Molly was sitting on the companion seat behind her. When they made their descent, the friend lost control of the bike at the steepest point of the road which caused both girls to be thrown from the bicycle. Molly struck her head on the rocks during the crash causing her to lose consciousness immediately even despite the helmet she was wearing.

Her parents then received the worst phone call of their life. When they arrived at the scene, they found multiple emergency response vehicles and paramedics tending to their daughter, but she remained unconscious. She was then rushed to UCLA Medical Center where doctors there discovered she had a small bleed between her skull and brain and prepared her for immediate surgery to stop the bleeding and relieve the pressure.

At first, doctors were optimistic about Molly’s recovery. They told her parents that she would likely wake up after a week or two and then deal with persistent headaches and light sensitivity. However, five days later, the swelling in Molly’s brain began to significantly worsen. Despite an additional emergency surgery, Molly died.

On August 1st, 2022 Molly’s parents filed a lawsuit against Rad Power Bikes, the manufacturer of the E bicycle on which Molly lost her life.
