Table Top Fire Pits Implicated In Multiple Burn Injuries

TabletopFirePit3

Almost 90,000 Colsen-branded tabletop fire pits sold by Amazon and Walmart nationwide are being recalled after dozens of shocking incidents left 19 people with burn injuries. Some of these injured victims required surgery while others were permanently disfigured.

The fire pits are a burn and fire hazard. Alcohol flames can be invisible and lead to flame jetting when the pit reservoirs are filled, causing fire to flashback to the alcohol containers, spewing burning alcohol onto nearby people, according to a recent notice published by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

“Use of the recalled fire pits can lead to injury quickly and unexpectedly, causing burns in less than one second that can be serious and deadly,” the CPSC stated.

The CPSC said it has received 31 reports of flame jetting and flames escaping from the product’s concrete barrier. 19 individuals sustained burn injuries as a result of the problem. Two of those individuals sustained third-degree burns to more than 40% of their bodies. At least six individuals required surgery, prolonged medical treatment, admission to burn treatment facilities, short-term disability, loss of function, physical therapy, or permanent disfigurement, according to the CPSC.

The recall involves about 89,500 Colsen-branded indoor/outdoor tabletop fire pits manufactured by Colsen Fire Pits of Miami, Florida, as well as Colsen-branded fire pits previously made by another company.

What to do if you’ve been burned by a fire pit

If you’ve sustained serious or moderate burn injuries as a result of a defective fire pit, you should immediately call the Florida product liability lawyers at Halpern, Santos, & Pinkert. You are entitled to recover damages for your injuries related to your medical expenses, lost wages, and reduced quality of life. Burns leave scars and mutilation injuries that last for the rest of your life. You deserve to be compensated for the psychological harm that burn injuries cause.

Who can I sue?

You can sue both the manufacturer of the fire pit and the retailer who entered the dangerous or defective product into the stream of commerce. So, if you purchased the fire pit from Walmart, you can file a lawsuit against both Colsen and Walmart for your injuries.

Product liability lawsuits

Product liability lawsuits are filed on one of three grounds. You can argue that:

  • A product is intrinsically defective and caused injury
  • A product has a manufacturing defect that caused injury
  • The company that manufactured the product failed to warn customers about a known danger related to the product, which caused injury

When it comes to the defective fire pits, the pits themselves appear to be intrinsically defective and prone to allow the fuel to jet, placing nearby individuals in extreme danger.
