Trader Joe’s Recalls Mango Tangerine Scented Candles Due To Fire Risk
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently announced the recall of Trader Joe’s mango tangerine scented candles due to a potential fire risk. According to the recall, the candle’s flame can spread from the wick to the wax causing a larger than expected flame and posing a fire hazard. The candles were sold nationwide at Trader Joe’s.
The CPSC recommends that consumers immediately stop using the product and return the candle to any Trader Joe’s store for a full cash refund of $4. Alternatively, consumers can complete the Product Feedback Form online to receive a $4 Trader Joe’s gift card by mail. Consumers will need to provide a receipt or a photo of the candle.
Trader Joe’s has received 14 reports of incidents involving high flames from the recalled candles. This includes three reports of minor property damage and two reports of minor burn injuries.
Candle injury lawsuits
We recently wrote about a Walmart class-action lawsuit involving allegedly defective candles. Such lawsuits are rather common.
In April 2024, plaintiffs filed a class-action lawsuit against Walmart over the Mainstays brand candles. Plaintiffs claimed that the candles were dangerous and prone to exploding. They could also catch fire and contain no warning about the alleged defects.
Target also faced a recall in May 2023 when the CPSC announced a recall of Target’s Threshold Glass Jar Candles due to the risk of burn and laceration injuries.
In July 2023, Aroma 360 faced a lawsuit accusing the brand of having foreknowledge that its candle design was defective but still selling the “unreasonably dangerous” candles to the general public. The lawsuit claimed that the candle created a very large flame, cracked in half when the plaintiff tried to pull the candle closer and had to be put out with a tumbler.
Product liability lawsuits and defective candles
Candles are not supposed to explode or emit high flames, and their casings are not supposed to crack when exposed to heat. When these things happen, they pose a fire risk and an injury hazard to anyone inside the home with the candle at the time that it’s burning. Generally speaking, if your candle is doing any of these things, you should immediately stop using it. But many folks don’t recognize the problem until it’s too late and the candle is already burning. They expose themselves to burn injuries and their home to property damage. In these cases, the manufacturer of the candle is liable for any injuries or property damage caused by the defective candle.
